Getting History Wrong With Minority Leader Chris Holbert

A short while ago, the new GOP minority leader of the Colorado Senate Chris Holbert delivered his opening day remarks, but anybody who paid attention in American History class stopped listening and started giggling just moments into the speech: There is great history here at our state Capitol, much of which points to a time fifteen […]

Chris Holbert and the Baumgardner Cover-Up

Senate President Kevin Grantham and Senate Majority Leader Chris Holbert have steadfastly refused to discipline Sen. Randy “Boob Grabber” Baumgardner over multiple claims of sexual harassment that occurred over a period of several years. Grantham and Holbert’s inexplicable protection of Baumgardner is certainly not a new story, but this now-familiar tale may be turning the corner into a […]

History Will Not Be Kind To Sen. Chris Holbert

In today’s in-depth post-mortem from John Frank and Jesse Paul of the Denver Post, a remark from Senate Majority Leader Chris Holbert that’s provoking a lot of discussion today on both sides of the aisle–and not the good kind: Democratic legislative leaders called Republicans “obstructionists” and pointed to a Colorado Supreme Court decision that affirms […]

Sen. Chris Holbert Is Terribly Afraid For Your Bathroom

Republican Colorado Sen. Chris Holbert reminded his followers on Facebook yesterday that he’s been trying to stop those nasty transgender perverts from sneaking into your daughter’s bathroom…well, for a really long time: You might think that somewhere in Sen. Holbert’s reasoning on the issue, he might figure out that the law has been on the books […]

Things You’re Not Supposed To Admit, Chris Holbert Edition

The Denver Post’s Lynn Bartels reported Saturday on the death earlier this month of Senate Bill 15-118, a bill that would have upped the incentive for Colorado middle class families to save for college tuition via the CollegeInvest program: Senate Bill 118 concerned Coloradans who save for college through a not-for-profit state agency called CollegeInvest, […]

Back To School With Rep. Chris Holbert

UPDATE: Statement from the National Center for Science Education: Otherwise a typical instance of the "academic freedom" strategy for undermining the integrity of science education, HB 13-1089 was unusual in targeting higher education as well as K-12 education. The primary sponsors of HB 13-1089 were Stephen Humphrey (R-District 48) in the House and Scott Renfroe […]

Chris Holbert Kicks Ball Over Fence, Goes Home

UPDATE: Dueling press releases from House Republicans and Democrats follow: “This budget is a responsible budget, one that increases funding for education, protects our seniors, invests in our students and helps to build a better Colorado,” said Speaker of the House Frank McNulty, R-Highlands Ranch. “Politics is compromise, and on a JBC with three Democrats […]

Read Your Own Bill, Chris Holbert

We wanted to be sure a story reported by Lynn Bartels of the Denver paper in the last couple of days got a mention–House Bill 12-1250, sponsored by Republican Rep. Chris Holbert, was killed by the House Finance Committee this morning on Holbert’s request. This bill would have shifted costs for the Public Employees Retirement […]

Death from COVID of Nunez a ‘Wake-Up Call,’ Says Holbert

(Promoted by Colorado Pols) “If anybody out there thinks that this can’t happen to them and their friends, the Joe-and-Lilly story really woke people up to, ‘Yeah, it can,’” said Chris Holbert, Colorado’s Senate Republican leader, expressing his sadness today over the death from COVID-19 of former state Rep. Joe Nunez of Douglas County and […]

Radio Host Misrepresents Holbert’s Stance on Recall Campaigns

There are some people out there saying recalls are a waste of time,” Republican State House Leader Patrick Neville told KNUS 710-AM host Chuck Bonniwell yesterday. To which Bonniwell asked, “Who are the people who say you are wasting your time?” Bonniwell then alleged that Colorado Politics reporter Marianne Goodland said that State Senate Republican […]

Sen. Holbert Yucks It Up Over Kavanaugh Rape Allegation

UPDATE: The Colorado Senate GOP is responding to Bente Birkeland’s story, and it’s a disaster: Colorado Senate Republicans today raised objections to a Colorado Public Radio report, appearing Tuesday, that falsely suggested Senate Majority Leader Chris Holbert and other lawmakers made jokes on social media about allegations of sexual misconduct that have emerged in the […]

Post-Holbert Coverup, Take Two on Baumgardner Expulsion

As the Denver Post reports, the new recently-exposed additional confirmation of serial sexual harassment by GOP Sen. Randy “Boob Grabber” Baumgardner is moving Senate Democrats to once again attempt a late resolution to expel Baumgardner from the chamber–a move likely to be killed by GOP Senate leadership, which appears to have cast any pretense of […]

Holbert stands behind statement likening Hick actions to spousal abuse

(Stay classy, Rep. Holbert – promoted by Colorado Pols) In a Facebook posting yesterday, state Republican Rep. Chris Holbert wrote that Gov. John Hickenlooper "treats us like we are his abused spouse." In explaining why he'd vote for gubernatorial candidate Bob Beauprez, Holbert wrote in response to a Facebook post of one of Holbert's Facebook […]

Treasurer Stapleton: Having Enacted SB10-001, the Colorado Legislature will Continue to Break Colorado PERA Pension Contracts as Needed. Comments from Priola, Labuda, DelGrosso, Holbert, Kerr, Hullinghorst, Swalm, and Kefalas.

TREASURER STAPLETON: THERE WAS NO "ACTUARIAL EMERGENCY" IN 2010 WHEN SB10-001 WAS ENACTED BY THE COLORADO LEGISLATURE. COMMENTS OF COLORADO PERA DIRECTOR WILLIAMS, PERA TRUSTEE CAROLE WRIGHT, PERA GENERAL COUNSEL SMITH, AND TREASURER STAPLETON. In 2010, the Colorado Legislature enacted legislation breaking Colorado PERA pension contracts.  Members of the Colorado Legislature, generally, have little respect […]

Radio show illuminates, that, for GOP, the road to diversity is rough

On KLZ’s Grassroots Radio Colorado , State Representatives Chris Holbert and newly elected Justin Everett said they and their allies have no interest in compromising on civil unions during the upcoming legislative session.

A caller asked the two GOP lawmakers, who was guest-hosting for regulars Jason Worley and Ken Clark, if the new Republicans at the state Capitol would fight harder against civil unions.

“I think that you’ll find that this incoming class is fairly well aligned against that,” replied Holbert. “However…we are in the minority, and I think that you’ll see the majority party move very quickly to pass that type of legislation.”

Holbert’s answer is no surprise, because most new Republican lawmakers, like them, are from safe Republican areas, which wouldn’t be expected to produce moderates.

The incoming Republicans aren’t as old as the people they replaced, Holbert pointed out on air, but they’re mostly ideologically similar.

And here’s the ironic part: the next day on the same radio show, representatives of the Rocky Mountain Black Conservatives and the Libre Initiative spent two hours  talking about how important it is for the GOP in Colorado to diversify.

The good folks on Grassroots Radio should ask themselves how they can possibly diversify the Republican Party if their leaders won’t budge on something like civil unions.

‘It’s water vapor’: More GOP climate denial precedes Colorado greenhouse gas bill’s passage

(Republished under Creative Commons license by Colorado Pols) by Chase Woodruff, Colorado Newsline April 28, 2023 In what’s become an annual tradition in the Colorado General Assembly, Democrats in the majority are spending the final weeks of the legislative session passing bills aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, while their Republican colleagues persist in outright […]

It’s Official: The “Kia Challenge” Inflated The GOP “Crimenado”

Among the many social ills weaponized by Republicans for electoral gain last year (albeit ineffectively) was an undeniable increase in auto thefts, seized upon by Republicans along with the general uptick in property crimes over the past couple of years as evidence of Democratic mismanagement. The causes of increased criminal activity after decades of decline […]

From Major Media Outlet To Personal Vendetta Machine

A substantial portion of the 2022 session of the Colorado legislature has been dominated by debate over policy to address the particularly dangerous synthetic opioid drug fentanyl, which has been responsible for an escalating overdose and death rate for nearly a decade as this cheap and powerful drug is smuggled in large quantities into the […]

GOP Rep. Sandridge Strikes Back Against Fentanyl Fearmongering

UPDATE: Here’s an example of the kind of misinformation Rep. Shane Sandridge is denouncing his fellow Republicans for: We’d say it’s time for an intraparty conference call. —– As Republicans in Colorado have ruthlessly attacked Democrats over the past few months over perceived rising crime rates, exploiting a complicated nationwide issue for oversimplified-at-best local political […]

The Slow Death of the Republican Crimenado Narrative

Republicans, including fledgling gubernatorial candidate Hiedi Heidi Ganahl, are trying really, really, really hard to cement a 2022 election narrative that crime is out of control in Colorado and it’s all because of Democrats. Vote for us, say Republicans, and your catalytic converters will be safe once again! This entire effort is getting rather silly. […]

Overkill: Republicans Are Jumping The “Crime Sharknado”

With Colorado Republicans single-mindedly focused on turning the complex and nationwide issue of rising crime into a partisan political weapon ahead of a midterm election in which they are desperately hoping to recover lost ground, the daily crime-beat headlines have become a continuous source of cheap messaging fodder to fuel their narrative. In the last […]

Republicans Still Not Optimistic About Governor’s Race

State Senate Minority Leader Chris Holbert was the featured speaker last week at a meeting of the Jefferson County Republican Men’s Club, where he basically acknowledged the sentiment that Republican gubernatorial candidate Hiedi Heidi Ganahl is not going to defeat Democratic incumbent Gov. Jared Polis next year. Holbert was more diplomatic about his opinion than […]

Last-Minute Treachery Threatens Redistricting Independence

As Colorado’s Independent Redistricting process nears its conclusion, the “independent” piece might be getting left behind in the final chaotic hours. Last week the Congressional Redistricting Commission approved a new map that must now be approved by the State Supreme Court. That map had its supporters and its detractors, but it seemed to be a […]
